For each
scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each
option may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. A
patient with this condition would have reduced pigment in their substantia
nigra. The condition is associated with accumulation of alpha-synuclein in the
basal ganglia, the nucleus of Meynert, and the hypothalamus.
2. A 25
year old female goes to her GP because she has recently noticed some limb
weakness and blurring of her vision. It is likely that she has plaques within
her CNS.
3.
Neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads composed of Tau protein would be
seen as flame-shaped structures in cortical neurons on immunohistochemical
labelling. You would also find senile plaques, composed of amyloid, in the
cerebral cortex.
4. Lewy
bodies are the neuronal inclusions seen in this condition, and are seen in both
the substantia nigra and the cerebral cortex. Patients have a cortical dementia
resembling AlzheimerÕs disease, but also have Parkinsonian features of
bradykinesia and rigidity.
5. On MRI
in a thirty year old patient there are small areas of demyelination within the
brain and spinal cord.
